  • Structural support with a minimal footprint

    The Cable Bullet intermediate post is a sleek, surface-mount, structural pass-through post, designed to support both your cables and top rail, with the smallest visual footprint possible. These posts can be used with Signature Series tensioning posts, or as infill for custom wood railing. Use with cable spacer bars to maximize the view from your deck, patio, or stairway.

    The intermediate post includes a stainless steel top that can be fastened to a wood or aluminum top rail. The fixed top is designed for straight runs. Select the pivot top when placing intermediates on a stair run.

    The intermediate post body includes pre-drilled cable pass-through holes every 3 inches on center, optimally sized for use with 5/32" diameter cable (max.). 36-inch posts are designed for 11 cables, 42-inch posts for 13 runs each. The elongated, tapered hole design offers the necessary support fo level runs, while still allowing the cable to pass through without kinking along sloped spans.

    Each post includes one post top, base plate, and base plate cover. Top rail fasteners and mounting screws not included.

  • Installation

    Supplies:

    • Drill and bits appropriate for anchoring end or intermediate posts to your selection of top rail and flooring
    • (4) Lag screws for mounting each post (e.g. 4” GRK 5/16” RSS Lag Screws - length will vary depending on your sub-structure). 
      NOTE: When mounting to a concrete foundation, use 1/4" x 3-1/4" Hex Head Tapcon screws. In lower-quality concrete, consider an epoxy anchor or very long wedge anchors.
    • (4) Screws to attach the post top to the handrail. For wood handrail, we recommend Grip Fast #9 Trim Head Screws (length will vary by handrail thickness). For attaching Signature Series Reinforced Aluminum Handrail, use Grip Fast #8 x 3/4" Phillips Flat Head Stainless Steel Sheet Metal Screws.

    Structural Guidelines

    The structure supporting your posts must be able to handle the transferred loads of the railing system (150-200 lbs of tension per cable). It is the installer’s responsibility to make certain that the structure your posts are fastened to is capable of supporting the applied loads.

    Handrails are also a structural component of cable railing and must be able to resist both the compression load of the tensioned cable and perpendicular guardrail loads.

    Select your post locations

    When designing your railing layout, follow these guidelines.

    • To minimize cable deflection, add Cable Bullet spacer bars or intermediate posts every 3-½ to 4 feet
    • Add structural intermediate posts to support your handrail where necessary

    Setting your posts

    Once your post locations have been identified, mark and drill pilot holes for the post-mounting lag screws. Angle each post according to your cable runs before securing them. Before tightening the lag screws, plumb each post using the leveling set screws at the base. Once your posts are secured, set the base cover plate.

    Attaching your top rail

    Use the ¼” Spanner Nut Bit to loosen the two threaded pins on either side of the stainless steel post top. Once your top rail is set, mark and drill pilot holes for each top mount. Secure the top rail, then tighten the threaded pins.

    Note: To ease the installation of your top rail you may detach the u-shaped top-mounting bracket from the post top completely by removing both threaded pins. Detaching and installing the top-mounting bracket is especially helpful when installing top rail on sloped runs, or where spacing is tight.
