Reviews

The finished result is spectacular.

"The finished result is spectacular. Getting there was some work. We selected fascia-mounted posts to better assure the posts remained plumb on an old cedar deck. Surface posts did not give us the same confidence, accurate or not. The posts, intermediate posts, and spacer bars are quite nicely made and have a thick robust coating. We selected - and love - black 3/16 cable. Note that the black oxide coating is easily scraped off if the cable is pulled aggressively through the posts, so we push fed them to minimize that. For our fascia posts we found it necessary to remove some of the cables and posts so the the anchoring screws could be further tightened, so it benefits the installation if one mounts the bracket then waits a day or two before fixing the posts, giving the four screws another tightening before fixing the posts. Wood compresses after initial tightening, and the tension of the cables can pull the posts out of plumb in a day or two. Droopy cables in the morning are not what you want to see. We found the recommendation for cutting cable lengths to be very accurate, but one must use the crimper carefully. First, position the crimper so one handle is against a strong surface, like a scrap of 2x6 so the handle doesn’t mark the deck surface, and push the other handle down with one hand so the other hand can position and hold the cable plus ferrule. With the size adjusters of the crimper facing away from the cable-holding hand there will be sufficient space for fingers to hold the ferrule and cable while the upward lever is pushed down to make the crimps. When the first crimped end is set into the cable adjuster the adjustment set screw should be turned in such that three or so turns are exposed outside of the adjuster housing. Once the other end of the cable is measured and cut this will allow for sufficient adjustment to tighten the cable fully. If the set screw is set further in you may run out of adjustment. Our crimper suffered a near catastrophic failure when during a crimp the pivot bolt shot out like a bullet. This was after about 40 crimps. We had 120 crimps to go! Of course the bolt flew 20’ in an unknown direction and fell through deck cracks, but it was eventually found. The pivot bolt nut had loosened during use. The treaded length of the shoulder bolt is not long enough for a nut plus lock washer, but I had a thin nut and lock washer to fix. I also wrapped the bolt+nut with some electrical tape to keep everything close in case it failed again. Cable Bullet may consider more thread and a lock washer, or a nylock nut."

Cable Bullet review

"I recently installed the Cable Bullet handrailing on my deck and staircase. Overall Cable Bullet is a a great product was easier to install than I thought it might be. However that said it really helped to have a finish carpenter working with me to ensure the posts were installed level, plumb and in alignment, which is key to installation. My number one recommendation is that the hand rail itself is not delivered with precise 90% square ends. Once we identified this issue we cut both ends and repainted them. After that was completed they fit tight and straight and look great! The over all fit and finish of the materials is also excellent. My brother in-law also hand a cable hand rail system installed which was custom manufactured, and I would say the Cable Bullet product looks better and was substantially less expensive."

Q&A

Can a terminal post be used as an intermediate post? I'd prefer the look of terminal posts and would like to use them everywhere. If yes, can the cable pass through or would it need tensioners on each side?
Hi Mike! It is possible to construct your entire project using terminal posts instead of intermediates, but we don't recommend it as it will significantly raise the cost of your overall project. If you still wanted to opt for all terminal posts, you would need to install metal tensioners on both sides of a 2-way terminal post which you could then pass your cable through without using the tensioning mechanism. Each metal tensioner comes with a set screws which you could drive in to match the look of the tensioning posts if you so desired, but they wouldn't provide any actual tension to the cables on your pass-through posts. Just make sure you aren't running your cables more than 20 feet between tensioning posts. Alternatively, you could make short cable spans and tension them at every post, but this will take quite a bit of time.
Do you offer a cable railing system without the top handrail? If not, is the rail necessary? The application is outside of eze breeze windows on an elevated deck. It’s added safety but will not be accessible from inside so no need for a top rail.
Hi, Brad! We do not offer a specifically, handrail-free system as we suggest that all projects to have handrail if the system is being used for railing. In your specific situation, our support team may be able to help you find a solution without handrail if the area is truly not accessible. We would be happy to discuss the options with you if you send photos of your project to info@cablebullet.com!
Hi, Is there a post option without cable holes? Then The cable hole could be drilled to match the slop of the stairs.
Great question! We do not typically offer blank posts. Our standard tensioning posts used along with our flexible 7x7 cable are designed to accommodate IRC-compliant stair slopes with the tensioners installed horizontally. We also offer line (intermediate) posts with beveled holes that allow the cables to pass through at an angle without deflection. If you had a different solution in mind, our support team would be happy to work with you on it! You can reach them by calling (574) 742-2737 or by emailing info@cablebullet.com.
do you make an inside corner post that can be used for stairs. I have a footbridge inside my home that is about 8" long with a 90 degree right turn down 4 steps.
Hi Jerry! In order to fully answer your question we would need more information about your setup. If you could send an image of your stairs and landing to info@cablebullet.com we may have a solution for you!
For the outside side mount 43 inch post, what is the overall size of the mounting plate? I believe the The has 4 holes. Also does the 36 inch post have the same mounting bracket size?
The Outside Corner Post mounting brackets for our Signature Series Side Mount Terminal Posts are X-shaped. They are 5 inches tall and 3.53 inches square following the lines of the X. Both our 42 inch posts and our 36 inch posts use the same mounting brackets. Each bracket has 4 holes for mounting the bracket to your surface and another 4 for attaching your post. I hope this answers your question! If you need more information, our customer service team would be happy to assist you at (574) 742-2737!
