What Size Cable Should You Use for Deck Railing?

The cable size you choose for your deck railing will directly impact your system’s safety and design. Your cable railing must be rigid to withstand the weight and force required under the International Residential Code (IRC) and any local ordinances in your area. So, be sure to consult all appropriate regulations before choosing the size of your cable.

Some of the most common cable diameters are:

  • 1/8”
  • 1/4"
  • 3/8”
  • 3/16"
  • 5/16”
  • 5/32”
  •

The diameter of your cable will depend on the intended use. While a smaller diameter such as ⅛” can be used for lesser trafficked areas, opting for a 5/32” cable is a safer bet for areas with heavy foot traffic.

Choosing the right material for your cable railing is as important as selecting the right size. For instance, for deck railing, you need to use corrosion-resistant stainless steel or other material so that your cable runs remain safe and stay in tip-top condition for as long as possible.
