The installation process is DIY-friendly, making it accessible for most homeowners and DIYers. It is possible to do with little-to-no DIY experience.

How does the tensioner system work?

The cable is cut to length, and a lobed washer and crimp sleeve are attached to it. Once the sleeve is crimped, it holds the washer in place. The assembled cable, washer, and crimp sleeve are inserted into the tensioner (Bullet), a set screw advances the washer, creating tension in the cable.

How many tensioners are needed per job?

The number of tensioners required will vary depending on the specifics of your project. You will need (1) tensioner at every anchoring point. For example, if you have a 15 ft. straight run with 10 lines of cable, you would need to purchase 20 tensioners. Our project support team can compile a list of all the tensioners and components you need, just fill out an estimate. If you have a larger project, consider purchasing a pack of tensioner kits. This will save you money—providing you with extra bits and a Cable Bullet which is essential for installing.

How many tensioners are included in the price?

Each kit includes one tensioner, one lobed washer, one crimp sleeve, and one set screw—everything you will need to secure one end of a single line of cable. Two kits are required per cable run. If you have a larger project, consider purchasing a pack of tensioner kits. This will save you money—providing you with extra bits and a Cable Bullet driver which is essential for installing.

Do I need to buy crimp sleeves separately?

No, crimp sleeves are included with the tensioner kit, so there’s no need to purchase them separately. However, it is a good practice to include a Spare Parts Bundle in your order just in case you lose, or damage one of the sleeves. This kit also includes additional spare lobed washers and set screws.

What size cable can I use these with?

Tensioners are compatible with 5/32” cable.

What qualifies as a "coastal" application?

A "Coastal" environment is defined as installations subject to marine air, salt-laden fog, and indirect atmospheric salt exposure (e.g., balconies, decks, and exterior staircases), usually within 1 mile of a saltwater or brackish coast.
Even so, it is recommended to rinse your railing with fresh water following any indirect exposure to salt spray or contaminants.

Approved "Coastal" environments do NOT include direct salt or chlorinated water contact such as: immersion or spray (docks, piers, or railings extending into or directly above bodies of water), pool splash zones (installations within 10 feet of a saltwater or traditional chlorine swimming pools or hot tubs), or direct exposure (frequent splashing from storms, waves, or pool activities). Products installed in any of the environments listed above are not covered under our warranty.

Is there a minimum thickness the metal posts needs to be for this hardware?: Hi Troy! We recommend a post wall thickness of no less that 1/4" if you are using aluminum posts or 3/16" if you are using steel. I understand that there is maximum length run for cables ranging from 40 -70 feet. How would you extend that run without adding another starting post after the end of the first run. For example .... i wanted to run a cable 80 feet from end to end?: Hi Guy! 80 feet is a long span of cable! We don’t recommend going more than 20 feet between tensioning posts to make sure your cables maintain the proper tension. Additionally, things like handrail and cable support should be considered. We recommend supporting your handrail (using pass-through/line posts) every 8 feet and supporting your cables (using either line posts or our spacer bars) every 4 feet.
